Colleagues,

Resently there has been alot of discussion on the runaway universe with the MAP satellite results. The question arises, what is the driving force behind the dark energy that assists the accelerated expansion of the of the universe besides big bang as observed by the high redshift supernova?

I was discussing with Dr. Alex Filippenko, Berkeley if some variation of the expansion force is from the quantum forces of the Casimir effect. The Casimir effect is the attractive force between two surfaces in a vacuum - first predicted by Hendrik Casimir over 50 years ago. In Lawrence Krauss' new Quintesssence (mystery of the missing mass), I couldn't find the association of the Casimir effect any where. There are some good web sites that describe this effect but don't directly connect it to the new dark energy. You might check out this URL and others on the Casimir effect and explore this connection yourself.
