There is an excellent section in today's Oregonian (Thurs. Nov. 1) put together by the Oregon State U. Extension Service, called "Looking for Oregon's Future: What is Sustainability?" It's also available on-line at
http://oregonfuture.oregonstate.edu/

It's a relatively well-balanced look at the issue of deciding what kind of communities (or world) we want for ourselves and future generations, and then figuring out what actions in our daily life are necessary make that possible and sustainable. So it ties in nicely with many of the discussions we've had on-line and in courses: the importance of knowledge about the natural world both for helping us formulate the "worldview" which helps us decide what is important, and for helping us choose actions that produce the outcomes we want.

Food for thought:

"Regardless of different personal views about science, no credible understanding of the natural world or our human existence…can ignore the basic insights of theories as key as evolution, relativity, and quantum mechanics." - The Dalai Lama
