              to E-mail Discussion pageHi
            everyone,
We're starting up a new free science lecture series at Portland State
University beginning Sept. 13, 2008 that I hope you'll enjoy. You
can find more details and complete schedule on the main science integration
page (http://www.scienceintegration.org ) or directly at
 http://oregonteacherscholars.pbwiki.com/Our-Cosmic-History . Here's
            a summary:

The theme of the series is "Our Cosmic History" -- an integrated,
big picture story of our human origins, from the big bang to the present
day, in light of our current scientific knowledge. The aim is to provide
a broad context for the narrower details of science, to help us more
easily see the relevance of each branch of science and see how they
            all fit together.

The series begins Saturday, Sept. 13, at 10 am at PSU with an overview
lecture, "Teaching a Unified Account of the Past," by Dr.
David Christian, Prof. of History at San Diego State University and
author of "Maps of Time: An Introduction to Big History."
Each of the 10 Saturday Symposia will have 2 parts:

 1) Public lecture (10 - 11:30 am) - Open to everyone: teachers, students,
and the general public. Each lecture will describe the highlights
of one stage of our cosmic history, with time for general questions
            on the topic.

 2) Brown bag lunch for teachers (noon - 1 pm) - Open to teachers...
bring your lunch and your questions and spend an hour discussing specific
activities and techniques for implementing ideas from the lecture
            into your classes.
