William Thwaites, PhD Daturday, Feb 15, 2003, 7:30 pm Science Bldg 1 Room 107 Portland State University

Dr. Thwaites, Prof Emeritus of Biology, SanDiego State University, is a strong advocate of high scientific standards in science education. High School biology texts do not give a historical perspective of evolution. In most, the observation that species have changed over time is lumped together with how the change occurred. Because of this confusion, students question the observation as well as the explanation. Thjwaites will discuss the geologic observations leading to Darwin's historic contribution to science and his own unsuccessful attempt to have the historical background for evolution included in a well-known high school biology text.

"Regardless of different personal views about science, no credible understanding of the natural world or our human existence…can ignore the basic insights of theories as key as evolution, relativity, and quantum mechanics." - The Dalai Lama
